Reception Walkthrough
Welcome to the Walkthrough. This tutorial is designed to get you producing reports quickly and easily; please be aware, however, that it will not explain the detail of what is happening each step of the way. For a more in-depth discussion of how to create reports for your own class, please refer to the report workshop.
In this walkthrough we are going to create reports for some reception children. When you start The Report King, you will see the following page.
You will then see the Your students page.
- Click on the I want to enter new information about my class link.
You will then enter the class editor. This is where you enter information about your class.
- We are going to start by entering the name of our first student: Emma Jones.
- Click the mouse on the first blank cell (the one underneath the heading "forename".)
- Enter Emma as the forename.
- Move onto the next cell, the one underneath "surname", by either clicking with the mouse, pressing the right cursor key, or pressing the tab key.
- Enter Jones as the surname.
- Move into the cell underneath "gender".
- Tell The Report King that Emma is female by typing f.
Now we are going to enter Emma's level of ability across the subjects.
- For Disposition and attitudes, enter m (for middle achiever).
- For Social development, enter l (for lower achiever).
- For Emotional development, enter m .
- For Language for communication and thinking, enter l
- For Linking sounds and letters, enter m.
- For Reading, enter h (for higher achiever).
- For Writing, enter m.
- For Numbers as labels and for counting, enter m.
- For Calculating, enter l.
- For Shape, space and measures, enter h.
- For Knowledge and understanding of the world, enter h.
- For Physical development, enter m.
- For Creative development, enter h.
If you make a mistake, the cell will be highlighted to indicate that you have entered a group incorrectly.
Go back to the start of the next row. Enter the name of another student: Peter Brown. He is male, so in the gender cell, enter m for male. You are now going to enter his abilities across the range of subjects. When you enter a cell, you will have noticed that a hint balloon appears. The hint balloon will tell you what groups are available for each subject.
- Enter a series of groups for Peter Brown. You can choose any abilities you want, so long as they appear in the hint balloon.
Now we are going to save your work.
- On the menu bar at the top of the window, click on File.
- Now click on Save as.
- The Save dialog box will appear.
- Enter Test Class into the filename box.
- Click on Save.
- Now leave the class editor, by selecting File, and then Exit.
You will then see the Your blank report page.
- Click on the I would like to use one of the built in report formats radio button.
- Click on the list box underneath. A list of options will drop down.
- Select Rich text report, by attainment target (more visually appealing).
- Click on Next
You will then see the Your report directory page.
- By default, The Report King will create your reports in My Documents. On some networks, you will have a folder that is like My Documents that is set up for you.
- We are going to keep the default setting, so just click on Next.
You will then see the Create reports for... page.
- We are going to create reports for all of the students in our class.
- Click on the All of the students in my class radio button.
- Click on Next.
You will then see the Generate reports page.
- Click on Generate to generate your reports.
- When The Report King has finished, look in My Documents.
- You should be able to see two files - one for each of the students you created. The Report King will name the files after each child, so Emma Jones's report will be called "Emma Jones".
- Try opening the reports in your word processor. You will see that each subject report is linked to the ability you entered into the class editor. You should also see that the reports are quite different from one another, even if you entered exactly the same ability groups.
Congratulations - you have completed the Report King for Reception walkthrough!
